By David Benioff
A screenwriter, when asked to write an autobiographical essay, decides instead to interview his grandfather about his experiences as a teenager during the siege of Leningrad. What follows is the story of his grandfather Lev's amazing, terrifying, and humorous coming-of-age and his unlikely friendship with another young Russian soldier, Kolya. Together they fight the horrors of day-to-day survival during the siege, venturing behind enemy lines in a quest they hope will save their lives. Benioff is an amazingly talented writer, and I was immediately drawn into this depiction of such a dark chapter in our world history. I recommend it for anyone who enjoys well-crafted historical fiction. . . . Reviewed by Gayle Wingerter
