All that mankind has done, though, gained or been: it is lying as in magic preservation in the pages of books.

The Lace Reader    A Novel by Brunonia Barry

lace_readerSalem, Massachussets, past and present, is the setting for The Lace Reader.  The quirky Whitney women have the "gift" of using handmade lace to foretell the future.  Towner resists using her gift, and in fact is disturbed by her experiences.   The richness of the characters, the suspense of the plot, and the author's skillful writing make this an exciting and enjoyable page-turner.  It includes a reading group guide, and I recommend it for book groups.

The Character Word of the Month for May is "Courtesy." Courtesy is being polite and having good manners. It is being considerate of others. It is a way of speaking and acting with people which gives them a feeling of being valued and respected.
