The walls of books around him, dense with the past, formed a kind of insulation against the present world of disasters.

Mink River

by Brian Doyle

Community is the beating heart of this fresh, memorable debut with an omniscient narrator and dozens of characters living in Neawanaka, a small coastal Oregon town. Daniel Cooney, a 12-year-old who wears his hair in three different-colored braids, has a terrible bike accident in the woods and is rescued by a bear. Daniel's grandfather, Worried Man, is able to sense others' pain even from a distance and goes on a dangerous mountain mission to track down the source of time with his dear friend, Cedar. Other key stories involve a young police officer whose life is threatened, a doctor who smokes one cigarette for each apostle per day, a lusty teenage couple who work at a shingle factory, and a crow who can speak English. The fantastical blends with the natural elements in this original, postmodern, shimmering tapestry of smalltown life that profits from the oral traditions of the town's population of Native Americans and Irish immigrants. Those intrigued by the cultural heritage of the Pacific Northwest will treasure every lyrical sentence.

NWBooklovers.org is our new favorite website. It is intended for you the reader, we the booksellers and they, the publishers. We've made it our new homepage and we'd urge you to do the same. There is a wonderful, interactive feature there called One Nightstand, where you can share short reviews, notes about what you're reading or a favorite line from a book. Everyday, there will be four new book-related or quirky headlines that you might not see anywhere else.

There is a listing of bookstores in the Northwest so you can find the contact information for a store in another town and perhaps have a gift certificate sent to a relative there. You can read stories about individual stores - you'll find one in the January archives about Inklings Bookshop. It is really ainklings-interior.jpg wonderful site that we're proud to be connected with. We hope you will make it your homepage or at least visit it several times per week. You will find reviews, interesting articles about authors a fabulous list of other booksy links.

AND today, (Oct.25th) we made the front page, under the 'Tour a Store' section. Read the article here!

Yakima Valley Reads PDF Print E-mail

fahrenheit451.jpgGet your bookmarks out! It's time for Yakima Valley Reads, a community reading event. This year's selection is Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury. In honor of Banned Book week, there was a reading from Fahrenheit 451 and other passages from banned books at YVCC earlier this week.

Linda Nixon, public programs librarian for the Yakima Valley libraries, hasn't read the book yet, but is looking forward to it.

"As a librarian, it's interesting because it deals with intellectual freedom and Bradbury's vision of a future where people don't want to read because there are so many other things that take up people's time."

There will be many upcoming events, such as fire safety storytimes for kids, altered book craft activities for teens and dystopian film showings. Author Chris Crutcher, one of the most frequently challenged young adult authors, will speak about censorship at the Allied Arts gallery at 7 p.m. Oct. 19.

Books and event schedules will be available at all 18 Yakima Valley Libraries locations, thanks to a bequest from the estate of Frank and Janet Wibom. For more information, look under the events schedule at www.yvl.org.

Father Jim Dressler is a young Catholic priest having a very difficult time keeping his vow of celibacy. Aside from being tempted by his high school girlfriend, Father Jim meets a beautiful barmaid at a tavern in his parish and develops a relationship with her. Reimringer does not fall back on easy, cliched descriptions of Dressler's struggles with women, but gets to the heart of how Father Jim occupies himself to try to stay on the straight and narrow. He also doesn't let the story dwell on the details of the struggle for too long, injecting hilarious scenes of Dressler with his working-classwave_of_forgiveness.jpg family. This is truly a masterful and flawless first novel.

“Brutal but beautiful, this book held me captive. Machart's writing is so hallowed it works like a salve on the brutality he levels on his characters, the farm animals, and the landscape. Four brothers, raised by a father made mean from a broken heart, are both physically and emotionally damaged by his neglect. The sibling bond is broken apart when three of the four brothers marry and seemingly land well, while the fourth and youngest struggles to reconcile his divergent lifestyle. Ultimately, there is a grace that comes out of all the violence and chaos.”

Safe From The Sea tells the story of Olaf and Noah Torr, a father and son whose long estrangement began after Olaf survived a shipwreck on Lake Superior. More than thirty years after the wreck, Olaf believes he is dying of cancer and asks his son to come home to his isolated cabin on the lake in order to help him die. Over the course of two weeks in November, against the backdrop of the dramatic upper Midwest landscape and weather, the men reconsider each other's lives, finally summoning the courage to confess, understand and forgive.

Noah's father finally tells his son for the first time the harrowing account of the wreck of Olaf's ore boat, the SS Ragnark, a horrible secret from that night, and the survivor's guilt that has dogged Olaf ever since and caused him to abandon his family. Noah's own struggle to make a life with an absent father finds its real reward in his relationship with his sagacious wife, Natalie, whose complications with infertility issues mark her husband's life in ways he only fully understands as the reconciliation with his father takes shape.

Tinkers

by Paul Harding

"This is such a quiet & beautiful novel. Harding writes some of the most wonderfully

descriptive lines & paragraphs I've ever read. Definitely worthy of the Pulitzer. "

Reviewed by Sue Domis

Harding's outstanding debut unfurls the history and final thoughts of a dying grandfather surrounded by his family in his New England home. George Washington Crosby repairs clocks for a living and on his deathbed revisits his turbulent childhood as the oldest son of an epileptic smalltime traveling salesman. The descriptions of the father's epilepsy and the cold halo of chemical electricity that encircled him immediately before he was struck by a full seizure are stunning, and the household's sadness permeates the narrative as George returns to more melancholy scenes. The real star is Harding's language, which dazzles whether he's describing the workings of clocks, sensory images of nature, the many engaging side characters who populate the book, or even a short passage on how to build a bird nest. This is an especially gorgeous example of novelistic craftsmanship.

impatient_with_desire.jpgImpatient With Desire

by Gabrielle Burton

"This is historical fiction at its best.  In 1864 Tamsen Donner and her family set out for California in a covered wagon train. Unfortunately, due to delays and poor decisions the whoe wagon train party ended up spending the winter snowbound and starving in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. "The Donner Party" became infamous for the choices they made in order to survive. This novel puts you right inside the story. Their plight will stir your soul and make you appreciate all your everyday comforts. This story will stay with you long after you put the book down."
