I have worked at Inklings almost since it's opening day. Back then, it was just a summer job while I was going to college! When I finished school and moved to Yakima, it turned into an exciting, challenging career. I became the store manager in 2004, and I have been the gift and sidelines buyer since 2006. I love books (obviously!), but I also enjoy finding lovely and unique things to stock in our store. If
My favorite book is Birds of America by Lorrie Moore. Some of my favorite authors are Margaret Atwood, Amy Hempel, Alice Munro and Marilynne Robinson. For more book reviews, visit my Goodreads! |

We transplanted to The Great Northwest in July of 2008, after spending our whole lives in the Midwest. We are currently pastoring Yakima Evangelical Church on 80th and Nob Hill. Even though I am the Technical Support for Inklings, I still enjoy reading, and always have since childhood. I remember going to the downtown library and trying to read all the childrens books they had. I especially loved Encyclopedia Brown by Donald J. Sobol, Cam Jansen by David Adler, and books about knots, origami, and all craft books. Now I am mostly a technical reader, although I have to confess that I liked The Financial Lives of the Poets and couldn't put Orson Scott Card's Pathfinder down. Can't wait for the sequel.
I am married to another Inklings employee, Renee. We have a 2 year old daughter, Isabella and a six month old daughter, Eliza.

I grew up on a farm, and my first job was helping my Dad plant and harvest crops. I still get to work with him driving the combine, tractor and various large farm implements. It is one of the most enjoyable jobs I've ever had because I get to see my family daily and listen to many audio books. Besides working with Dad and at Inklings, I am a professional photographer. I take portraits and scenic pictures, and I graduated from the Photographic Center Northwest in Seattle. I can usually be found with a camera in hand. But if I'm not taking pictures, I'm reading or taking care of my baby, Liliana. She is 1 year old!
Favorite Books:
- Sevenwaters Trilogy and all books by Juliet Marillier
- Constant Princess, The Queen's Fool and all the others by Philippa Gregory
- Shogun by James Clavell

I started at Inklings in October of 2011 and have loved every minute of it. In high school, I remember going to Inklings when it was at Glenwood Square and fantasizing about working in a bookstore someday. Now, here I am! My favorite part of working at Inklings is meeting new people and catching up with people I haven't seen in a long time. I have always had a deep love of reading and was raised in a home where writing, specifically newspaper reporting, was held in high esteem. In April of 2011 I graduated from George Fox University with a double major in Sociology and Biblical Studies. In May, I married my high school sweetheart and settled back into Yakima. When I am not at Inklings, I can most likely be found at Yakima Foursquare Church where I am a 20 Something's and Assistant Youth Pastor. My favorite genre of books is generally Religious (shocker, I know) and Biography. My husband and I have a deep love of traveling and eating so the cooking and travel section of the bookstore have been well-loved by us. The object of our affections is our cat, Abner. We spend a lot of time doting on him and making his life fantastic. I am a BIG animal lover. Look forward to seeing you in the store!

In elementary school I was given the chance in fourth and fifth grade to help out as either a crossing guard, food service/dishwasher in the kitchen, helping in the library or in the office. I think because my best friend was helping do food service, as well as the cutest boy in school, I decided to try that first. After burning myself and hating the smell of ammonia I decided that I couldn't be bought by just a free lunch and a chance to look at the boy who wouldn't speak to me, so I changed over to working in the library. It was like heaven. It was quiet and we were allowed to check out more than the regular seven books! (I used to ask people if they would checkout books for me because I was always at my limit!) On Fridays we would get to choose a treat from a big bowl of goodies. I managed to lose a tooth in a Rollo! Ah, memories...
Now I get paid to work in a book store! How great is that? I have to say that a big sum from that check goes right back into the store.... It's a little dangerous.
I love to learn new things and translating the words and pictures of a book into something I've made in person is a huge thrill ("Amy Butler's Little Stitches for Little Ones", Betty Crocker's "Cooky Book"). Most of the fiction that I read is a bit on the odd-ball side ("The True Confessions of Max Tivoli" by Andrew Sean Greer) or a classic ("Rebecca" by Daphne Du Maurier). Sometimes both! ("A Picture of Dorian Gray" by Oscar Wilde). And then I still get caught up in kids' books ("The Pink Refrigerator" by Tim Egan) and just about anything that will make me laugh ("Don't Let the Pigeon Stay Up Late!" by Mo Willems) or have a deep thought ("Little People in the City: The Street Art of Slinkachu").
Here are some other books that I love:
- Rustic Desserts - Delish!
- Time Travelers series by Linda Buckley-Archer - What a truly historic adventure.
- Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket - Off-kilter and funny
- The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas - A classic with a revengeful twist.
- Drama of the Gifted Child by Alice Miller - Whew! This book changed my life.
- Magic Books by Esther K. Smith - Making magic out of paper
- Hayfever by Noel Coward - Coward is my favorite playwright.
- Bend the Rules Sewing by Amy Karol - Such sweet, simple projects. Love her blog!
- The Arrival by Shaun Tan - Such an incredible, beautiful and poignent book...without words!
- Goodnight, Mr. Tom by Michelle Magorian - A quiet, moving story about a boy and an old man learning to trust again. (My favorite since middle school.)
- The Principles of Uncertainty by Maria Kalman - Quirky illustrations to go along with the stories that make up her life.
You're welcome to take a look at more of the books I love at Goodreads.com!
(And if you come in and look for me it's best not to expect thesame thing twice. One minute I'm a brunette in jeans and then I'mplatinum in a cute little dress!)

I’m constantly singing , or at least humming to myself, most often at inappropriate times. I adore the internet and can use it to figure out just about anything you could possible hope to know. If I wasn’t working at Inklings, I would be traveling all over the world, financing my endeavors by either working odd jobs or singing for my supper. Born and raised oversea s, I love language and travel. I’m happy to be back in Yakima for a while after my recent accomplishment of graduating from Whitworth College. During my four years in Spokane, I studied Biology and French, learned how to deep-fry oreos, and passably ‘mastered’ the dance of Maori Poi. Known for my whistling skills and the ability to snap with my ring finger, I try not to talk or sing to myself too much while I’m on the job. Five Favorite Books: - The Joy Luck Club ~ Amy Tan
- Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight ~ Alexandra Fuller
- The Kite Runner ~ Khaled Hosseini
- Housekeeping ~ Marilynne Robinson
- Schott’s Original Miscellany ~ Ben Schott

I've been working at Inklings since 2003 and hope to continue doing so for a long time. I love to surround myself by books and was first introduced to the world of literature by my grandpa, George Simon. I would sit on his lap and read the Book of Virtues to him. There are so many wonderful stories in that book and I'm glad I got to share them with my grandpa. I'm excited that my two daughters also have a grandpa who likes to read to them. There are many books that I love to read over and over and over: The Giver (my ALL time favorite) by Lois Lowry Books of Bayern: Goose Girl, Enna Burning, River Secrets and Forest Born by Shannon Hale Sevenwaters Trilogy: Daughter of the Forest, Son of the Shadows, Child of the Prophecy and Heir to Sevenwaters by Juliet Marillier The Host and Breaking Dawn by Stephanie Meyer The Red Tent by Anita Diamant Percy Jackson and the Olympians (series of 5 books) by Rick Riordan City of Ember, People of Sparks, Diamond of Darkhold by Jeanne DuPrau Some of my other favorites are: Ender's Game and Pathfinder by Orson Scott Card, Delirium by Lauren Oliver, anything by Sandra Dallas, I am Four by Pitticus Lore, Matched by Allie Condie, The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan , Chaos Walking Trilogy by Patrick Ness Books on my To-Read/Want-To-Read shelf are: Preschoolwise by Ezzo, Sent by Margaret Haddix, Power of Six by Pitticus Lore, and Son of Neptune by Rick Riordan |
I was born and raised in Yakima, and though I did venture outside when I was a child, I spent many long summer days reading. The word ‘Inklings’ has been with me for some time, since I grew up reading works from two of the group’s most well known authors, J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis. From there, I devoured every Terry Brooks fantasy novel as soon as a new one was published. I broadened my reading as I majored in English and also received a graduate degree in the subject from Central Washington University. I have been an English instructor at various higher education institutions in the region, and still teach at Yakima Valley Community College. I also write personally and professionally.
I am fond of 19th century American writers, especially the poems of Whitman and Dickinson and the writings of Twain and Poe. I balance my reading time with nonfiction books on philosophy, religious studies, and current events; local poets’ poems; Preston and Child’s Pendergast novels (a guilty pleasure); and canonical and non-canonical American literature. |

I was born in North Bend, WA in 1953. Having two older brothers, I wasa surprise, and I guess, a happy one. Living in Small Town, USA forthe first 7 years of my life, I had hours of outdoor play and hourswith some of my best friends - books! My long hair needed tending eachmorning, so my Mom sat behind me brushing, braiding and teaching me toread when I was four. After our family moved up to Snoqualmie Passwhere our nearest neighbors were distant, that friendship with booksand the North Bend librarian, gave me hours of imagination and companionship. Attending a rural school with 100 kids in 1st through 12th grades, gave me a good childhood full of teachers who cared about me and myeducation. Having no social life to speak of, I read all the time, worked hard as a student and didn't even mind long winters with sixfeet of snow on the ground. While my Dad worked nights for theDepartment of Transportation plowing that snow, I watched my Mom keepthe furnace stoked with coal and wood and enjoyed a wonderfulcompanionship with her, a kindred book spirit.
I married that tall blond basketball player that my Home Ec. teachersaid looked like a Greek god. He likes me to remember that. We wereonly 18, so we kind of grew up the rest of the way together, and we'vebeen married 38 years. We spent a few years in Chicago and Tennesseegoing to school and then moved back to Central Washington where weraised our four children and Jim started an aircraft rebuilding andmanufacturing company called Cub Crafters.
We opened Inklings Bookshop in September of 2000 with no retailexperience and a lot of optimism. My business partner, Mandi, made upfor all my deficiencies in education, organization and creativity andshe made us look good from the start. I am now the sole owner, but Iuse what I learned from her every day. I can't believe that Inklingsis approaching its eleventh birthday. What a ride this has been andcontinues to be. I love what I get to do every day, the people I meetand the challenges that keep me growing!
One of my other favorite roles is being Grandma Sue and spending time with my granddaughter, Sophie, a first-grader who reads like awhiz! I also have another granddaughter named Merit and a grandson named Atlas. I thoroughly enjoy them. Visit my Goodreads for more book reviews! |
I was born and raised in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and will always be a Midwestern girl at heart. In 2009, I graduated from the University of Northern Iowa with a B.A. in English Literature, and also spent time studying entrepreneurship. Working at Inklings has been a real blessing because I wasn’t sure I’d be able to put my major and interests to good use, but this seems as though it’s the perfect place to do so! I still have a lot to learn about the book selling industry, but I am enjoying every moment of my training in a friendly, small business atmosphere!
I was fortunate enough to travel during high school and college, and spent time in Europe writing for a semester. My husband and I backpacked through Guatemala after graduation and I’m convinced that we’ll never stop trying to travel the world. I love coffee (probably too much), planning trips, writing, experimenting in the kitchen, trying something “outdoorsy” with my husband, and of course, the sweet smell of an Iowa cornfield. Some memorable reads for me have been: The Sun Also Rises by Earnest Hemingway The Prophet by Kahil Gibran Blue Like Jazz by Donald Miller The Lord of the Rings Trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien I always enjoy reading Annie Dillard, C.S. Lewis, Rod McKuen's poetry, and anything in the creative non-fiction genre. There is an ever-growing amount of titles on my “To Read” list, but I’m open to suggestions so feel free to share some of your favorites with me! |
