Any book that helps a child to form a habit of reading, to make reading one of his deep and continuing needs, is good for him.

In Search of Wings Lost is a touching, often humorous, decidedly important allegory about a young duck living in a society facing civil unrest and the threat of extinction from predators both animal and human. Whether teenage or adult, readers will be captivated by Marcel, a timid, quite ordinary bird who discovers within himself a passion for doing what is right for his feathered society struggling to survive in The Bloedel Reserve. Like Watership Down, we quickly forget that these characters—the brave, the selfish, the pretentious, the wise—are animals and not people. And therein lies the magic of this book: lessons learned, courage found, all accomplished through a poetic and imaginative novel reminding us who we can be and how we can find our way in an embattled world where individuals sometimes rise above conflict and lead us toward a more meaningful existence.

Donald Berk grew up in Upstate New York, attended Cornell University and served in the Air Force during Vietnam. After retiring from an international career in technology, he earned an MFA in Writing and Literature from Bennington College, and an FAA flight instructor certificate. With kids and grandkids in Seattle, he now writes and teaches flying in Yakima, Washington.
