When the Day of Judgment dawns and the great conquerers and lawyers and statesmen come to receive their rewards--their crowns, their laurels, their names carved indelibly upon imperishable marble -- the Almighty will turn to Peter and will say, not without a certain envy when he sees us coming with our books under our arms, "Look, these need no reward. We have nothing to give them here. They have loved reading.

hotel_on_the_corner_of_bitter_and_sweet.gifJamie Ford’s debut novel,  Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, has received numerous awards, including The Montana Book Award, the 2010 Asian/Pacific American Awards for Literature, and it was the National #1 Book Club Pick for this past fall and winter. “Hotel” has become an international best seller, including achieving the #1 position in Norway, Italy, and Taiwan.  It has been translated into21 languages, including  Serbian!  The book has been used in high schools as a tool for studying the era and Northwest History.

The Japanese internment of WWII comes alive in Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, set in 1940’s Seattle’s International District.  Ford provides a glimpse of the damage that is caused by war--not the sweeping damage of the battlefield, but the cold, cruel damage to the hearts and humanity of individual people.  This is a book you will want to share with others, and one you will long remember.

The event will include readings, discussion, question and answers.  Copies of the book are available at Inklings Bookshop, 5629 Summitview Avenue, and will be available for sale at the event.

Call Inklings (965-5830) to reserve a space for you and your friends.
