As Betty Delight Maier's mother became gravely ill, she sat with
her at her bedside, rekindling memories and telling stories of potluck dinners
and holiday gatherings.
"We'd look out the window reminiscing," Maier
says.
It was during those times with her mother and family that Maier
realized how to finish her recently published book, "For Mom &
Sarah."
She said it all came together when talking to her family about
everything that had happened over the years.
"I remember everything so
vividly," she says.
At first it was a collection of short stories but
Maier wanted it to be something more than that, something that told the story of
her life and the people around her.
"I had such a memorable childhood,
I wanted everyone that I grew up with to know how much I appreciate them," she
says.
Maier now lives in the Wenas Valley but was born and raised in
Yakima and the setting for her book takes place there, in the neighborhood of
North 28th Avenue behind Castlevale School.
"The neighborhood people
in that time were so close, back then everyone took care of each other," she
says.
Maier began writing her book in 1991 and took the leap of
publishing in November 2008. She has already written two other books that she
plans on publishing, one is a collection of poetry and another is a cookbook
with recipes from her mother, grandmother, great grandmother and other family
members and friends. She also plans on following up this book with another that
will continue from where it left off called, "For Mom & Sarah, Book 2, As
Time Goes By," hopefully by the summer of 2009.
